OK as root I can mount and umount usb pen, mp3 player digi camrea not problem, as a user I can mount ok but I can not umount I get the following error
mit@Titan:~$ umount /dev/sda1
umount: /mnt/usbdisk: device is busy
umount: /mnt/usbdisk: device is busy
I was at a meeting earlier today and a couple people were trying to help me resolve the problem said it was something to do with konqueror (running kde 3.3.2). To umount the usb device I have to quit KDE to the cli umount there and then go back into kde
Can anybody shine any light on this problem??
I would really like to beable to plug in one of my usb toys and have it auto mount and once finished unplug it and have it auto umount (as ubuntu does), but I would settle for just being able to umonut in kde as a user (mounting as a user and trying to umount as root also fails within KDE).
I am running Debian testing, kernel 2.6.8 (stock off the shelf debian), kde 3.3.2 (debian std).
Have you cheked the permissions for the user? perhaps you have enable permisions to mount the devices but not to umount them.
Since as root you can mount and umont devices I'm not so sure that the problem is with kde (however is a posibility)
The best advice I can give you is to change your distribution, I've woked with different distributions and I can tell you Debian is not one of my favorites, you wouldn't find that kind of problems with mandrake.
It is a KDE problem as (I can't tell you exactly how) but they ran a couple of commands from a terminal screen that showed it was konqueror.
I would agree that the likes of Mandrake, Suse and (debian like) Ubuntu just install and set these things up and they work. But on the other hand Debian is rock solid and so easy to update and upgrade. But to change distros just because is USB does not work........well I might as well go back to winodws, no thanks
MMM... don't give up... try checking the permissions, the esiest way to do so is open a shell or a virtual console (control + alt + f1) and type
linuxconf --text
then go to user accounts and give supperuser equivalence (checking granted) and apply the changes.
Perhaps this will solve the problem...
in linuxconf you can give SuperUser equivalence to any user if you want, is the easiest way to be sure that the user has total acces to what root can do...

Ideas to try. I current use the first one under kde 3.4.1.3
This might work for you with KDE to umount. Goto Control Center > Desktop > Behavior > Device Icons. Check the box ' Show device icons '. Now uncheck all the other boxes. Now see if you can unmont usb devices.
Another option is to change the settings in Control Center > KDE Components > KDE Performance > Preloading. Change to 1 or 0. See if that helps.
