Printing in RedHat 7.2 PLEASE HELP

I'm running RH 7.2, and still on kernel 2.4.7-10. I"ve installed cups, cups-devel and cups-pstoraster, as well as the latest and greatest gimp-print (and in that order!).

I've got 2 USB ports on the back of my IBM 300GL. My logitech usb dual optical works with no problems in the first USB port. I've plugged in my Epson Stylus C80 into usb port 2

lsmod shows that usbcore and usb-uhci are loaded, however printer is not automatically loaded (haven't figured out where modules are loaded from in RH yet) so I modprobe printer before I try any of this.

/proc/usb/devices shows the printer

I can echo > /dev/usb/lp0 but I don't get any feedback at all (from the printer or commandline)

I run the cups admin from a browser, give the printer a name & description, and use the C80 CUPS+GIMP-print v4.2.2-pre1 (en) driver. Whenever I try to print a test page CUPS tells me "processing page 1...." and that's all I get.

Same issues are seen when I use the parallel port.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Make sure that the printer is plugged in and switched on and that the printer module is loaded before starting the cups server.

i've tried stopping cups, restarting (physical) printer, and using 'modprobe printer' then restarting cups, and re-adding the printer. Same symptoms.

Where are services controlled in RH 7.2? The system now starts CUPS automagically at startup, and I'd like to have the printer module load before CUPS does, for obvious reasons.
