As per allend's comments, try installing the following...

sudo apt-get install lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32stdc++6
I'm not sure if this needs to be done prior to the Brother driver installation, or it can be done post-install, but give it a shot and report back.

This is the solution!!! The printers work now, after reboot, as well! Take all my appreciation! Thank you for your persistence in solving this problem. I owe you a bottle of champagne, but it seems you are just on the opposite end of our Earth. :-))
