USB printer problem. Printing stops
I have a printer problem which has persisted in several distros, Slackware 9.1 and 10.2, Kubuntu and Mepis.
I am running CUPS My Brother 1250 worls fine off a parallel port. The problem is with my Epson Stylus Color 740 which is connected to a USB port. When I try to print the test page the printing starts and consistently stops part of the way down the page. The printer manager reports that 20% of the page has been printed and it is still printing. It remains stopped and stuck. The only way of getting the printer going again is to turn it off and on, and disconnect and reconnect the usb part. The same happens on trying to print anything. It stops part the way through. The printer works fine from Windows 98. The persistance of the problem leads me to suspect that it is in the hardware, Athlon 700, USB 1. Any ideas? Alan |
give the output of dmesg command
secondly do your printer administration through CUPS server which runs on port 613 remove the printer and administer it again http://127.0.0.1:613 |
Removing and adding the printer again through the CUPS server gets the same result.
Stops 20% through the page dmesg shows hub.c: new USB device 00:07.4-2, assigned address 3 hub.c: USB hub found hub.c: 4 ports detected hub.c: new USB device 00:07.4-2.4, assigned address 4 usb.c: USB device 4 (vend/prod 0x4b8/0x1) is not claimed by any active driver. usb.c: registered new driver usblp printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 4 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04B8 pid 0x0001 printer.c: v0.13: USB Printer Device Class driver printer.c: usblp0: nonzero read/write bulk status received: -110 |
your printer is detected u only have to add the printer
so as a root user either #kprinter or http://127.0.0.1:631 |
As I wrote. Adding the printer is not the problem. Connecting to CUPS is not the problem. The problem is that printing stops in the middle of the page.

Sounds like a printer driver issue. Where did you get it?
I use ESP Print Pro for my printing. It offers a fully functioning driver for your printer. Check it out at: http://www.easysw.com/printpro/ |
I have used the Epson Stylus Color 740 - CUPS+Gimp-Print v4.2.7 driver that came with the installation and off the linux printers site.
I suspect that this is a USB issue myself |
output of
#dmesg |
