USB Printer: Is there a "tty" driver?
Got a new Dell POS system. Dell claims to support Linux, but... the POS only comes with Windoze XP.

We have a whiz-bank (oops, little Froodean there... I mean whiz-BANG) POS running on Red Hat, but we're moving to SuSE (9.2 now, but will likely upgrade as it goes... try to change as Novell does). The Dell gear is really nice (had a battle with the touchscreen, but it's running perfectly now).

In fact, everything's running just swell... except the receipt printer. Dell spec'ed a Star Micronics (exactly what we're using now, anyway) but delivered an Epson TMT88-III, which is a perfectly good printer (we just like the Star better)... except that there is no USB driver for it... nothing, nada, zip, gar nichts.

With a 20-year history behind it, our software has pretty much always taken care of most of its own "driver" responsibilities, and still does. Yeah, we expect the OS to manage the spooling, buffer-full, paper-out stuff (left over from when parallel printer ports were called "Centronics parallel"), but as far as font selection and that sort of thing... we'll worry abbout the "control" codes, thanks.

So what we really need for this beastie is a pretty plain-vanilla driver, kinda what's gotten to be known as "tty" or "plain ascii".

If there's one out there, we haven't found it yet, but we're still looking.

Meanwhile, this forum's been a really great source of good information, so I'm hopin' one of you brilliant people has a pointer for me...

How 'bout 'cha??

Or the cp command, or... the problem is, I haven't been able to find a device to cat or cp TO... usbview shows it, but no driver is assigned, and as far as I've been able to tell, nothing in the /dev hierarchy points to it... if it did, I'd be happy to cp myfile.prn /dev/usb/boogabooga or cat it or whatever...
