USB printer installation in Slackware 10.1
Hi to everyone. I have a USB printer, Epson EPL-5900L, and I try to install it in Slackware 10.1 with kernel "bare.i" (default recommended kernel) to use with CUPS.
So I installed the Foomatic packages, in the last versions. In order, I installed these packages: - foomatic-filters-ppds-20050301 - foomatic-db-20050301 - foomatic-filters-3.0-20050301 - foomatic-db-engine-3.0-20050301 - foomatic-db-hpijs-1.5-20050301 Then I installed printer drivers for Epson printers (epsoneplijs-0.4.0.tgz) and I configured CUPS. This is the configuration of my printer like appears in CUPS Printers panel: Epson EPL-5900L Foomatic/epl5900l (recommended) Description: Epson EPL5900L Location: Printer State: idle, accepting jobs. Device URI: usb:/dev/usb/lp0 If I try to print the test page, the printer seems to be dead. And in CUPS jobs panel, i found this: MyPrinter-1 Test Page root 15k aborted If I try to restart the job, I get this error: Error: client-error-not-possible Obviously I loaded the module for USB printer support (activating it in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules). Help me, please! I need to print documents, so I can leave Windows for good. :) Thanks in advance, Scorpion77 |
I have reinstalled Slackware 10.1 and I reinstalled all Foomatic packages and the printer drivers. Now the configuration of my printer is changed, the device URI was usb:/dev/usb/lp0, now is usb://EPSON/EPL5900L.
Here it is the configuration of my printer like appears in CUPS Printers panel: Epson EPL-5900L Foomatic/epl5900l (recommended) Description: Epson EPL-5900L Location: Printer State: idle, accepting jobs. Device URI: usb://EPSON/EPL-5900L But the printer still seems to be dead. :( This is the contents of the file /tmp/foomatic-rip.log: foomatic-rip version $Revision: 3.43.2.9 $ running... called with arguments: '13', 'root', 'Test Page', '1', '' Parsing PPD file ... *cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip" Added option ColorSpace Added option Resolution Added option PageSize Added option PageRegion Added option ImageableArea Added option PaperDimension Added option PrintoutMode Added option FlowControl Added option Density Added option TonerSave Added option Dpi Added option Ritech Added option Font Parameter Summary ----------------- Spooler: cups Printer: MyPrinter PPD file: /etc/cups/ppd/MyPrinter.ppd Printer model: Epson EPL-5900L Foomatic/epl5900l (recommended) Options: Job title: Test Page File(s) to be printed: <STDIN> ================================================ File: <STDIN> ================================================ Reading PostScript input ... --> This document is DSC-conforming! ----------- Found: %%BeginProlog Found: %%EndProlog ----------- Found: %%BeginSetup Found: %%BeginFeature: *PrintoutMode Normal Option: PrintoutMode=Normal --> Setting option Found: %% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: PrintoutMode=Normal Option: PrintoutMode=Normal --> Setting option Found: %%BeginFeature: *PageSize Letter Option: PageSize=Letter --> Option will be set by PostScript interpreter Found: %%BeginFeature: *FlowControl Off Option: FlowControl=Off --> Setting option Found: %% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: FlowControl=Off Option: FlowControl=Off --> Setting option Found: %%BeginFeature: *Dpi FromPrintoutMode Option: Dpi=FromPrintoutMode --> Setting option Found: %% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: Dpi=@PrintoutMode Option: Dpi=FromPrintoutMode --> Setting option Found: %%BeginFeature: *Density 3 Option: Density=3 --> Setting option Found: %% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: Density=3 Option: Density=3 --> Setting option Found: %%BeginFeature: *Ritech FromPrintoutMode Option: Ritech=FromPrintoutMode --> Setting option Found: %% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: Ritech=@PrintoutMode Option: Ritech=FromPrintoutMode --> Setting option Found: %%BeginFeature: *TonerSave FromPrintoutMode Option: TonerSave=FromPrintoutMode --> Setting option Found: %% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: TonerSave=@PrintoutMode Option: TonerSave=FromPrintoutMode --> Setting option Found: %%EndSetup Inserting PostScript code for CUPS' page accounting ----------- New page: 1 1 Inserting option code into "PageSetup" section. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PRINT!!! :D
The problem was that I installed epsoneplijs-0.4.0.tgz package with pkgtool, but really the file extension has deceived me, but it wasn't a package already compiled for Slackware, but was a .tar.gz compressed file. So I installed it with the usual procedure: ./configure make make install Now I'm completely independent from Windows! Bye, Scorpion77 |
