USB Printer

I'm trying to install a Canon i70 (portable) printer on Slackware 9.0. The software I'm planning to use is Cups and espegs. Both programs are already installed. And my biggest problem is that I don't know how to configure the printer.

In another forum I read that you configure the printer by opening your browser and typing http://localhost:631 and after that you should see a menu that you can then define your printers.
I tried typing this in my browser address text box but i get an error when i hit enter.
what could be problem?

./etc/rc.d/rc.cups start
at the CLI, then try the localhost:631 again

you may also want to check /etc/cups/cupsd.conf make sure your listening to port 631(under network options) and in the deny/allow section it should have "deny from all" then "allow from 127.0.0.1" . if you make any changes, you will have to restart the cupsd.

I did what follows as root.

i checked /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and i'm listening to port 631 and in the deny/allow section i have deny from all and allow from 127.0.0.1. I still get the same error. :-(
By the way, every line is commented except for the ones i just mentioned. Is it supposed to be that way?

I don't have to be hooked up to the internet to connect to local host 631 do I?
Please help me. The return policy on my printer is 14 days, and i have to know if it's going to be compatible with linux before the policy expires

I just realized that when i installed cups using pkgtool I only downloaded the "main" file. In the extras folder you can download two more files: a 644 byte file containing the description of the program and a compressed (tgz) file. cups-1.1.18-i386-2.tgz.asc.

So these two files were missing when i installed cups. Is that what could be causing the problem? or are those two files insignificant?
thanks

i'm thinking that you'll need them. and you don't need to be connected to access localhost:631, and almost all of my cupsd.config is commented out as well, it's not needed for a locally connected printer. your usb is configured? other usb devices work?, as for the printer, it's very new, thats a bad thing considering that the factory doesn't supply drivers, i'm not saying that it won't work, but you may have to use another canon driver which might not give you the best print quality.
