USB pendrive kills host controller

i've got a toshiba laptop with RH7.1 (with a tonne of upgrades/mods to it).
I can plug a usb pendrive in, and mount it, use it etc.. with no problems.
When it comes to unplugging it, i unmount it, remove the modules and then unplug it (physically)

if i then check dmesg i get a warning the the host controller has been stopped (very bad!) and USB stuff fails to work after this.

am i doing something wrong/stupid? its not just with the pendrive either, i have a hardrive and VOIP handset (that both work fine, in fact i can pipe xmms output down the headset!). unplugging these in the same way also kills it!

damn usb!!! plug'n'play my arse....

What happens if you do not remove the modules?

BTW which ones are you removing?

whatever i do before removing a usb device, it kill the controller.

i've tried

> removing the modules
> using scsi eject commands (to eject the memory stick)

but it always dies.
