Unhappy USB nuts

Hi there!

I'm new to the forum, so in the first place I'd like to greet everybody. Hope I can help at least as much as I'm helped.

Second, please forgive my lousy English; I'm Spanish

OK, let's get to the problems. I'm running RH 9 on a PIII box. RH 8 was my first approach to linux, and I had some *** of a time getting all started.

When I updated to 9 and after the kernel updates I made some changes to my box, and now everything is wrong again.

I can't work with anything plugged via USB. When I try SANE with my canon NU650, it just tells me no device is available.

I can't even print with my canon BJC2100.

Can anybody tell me what's wrong with the USB ports? How can I check to see if everything is installed correctly?

Thanks,

Do lsmod and look for usbcore and usb-uhci modules (I beleive there is another called usb-ohci you might see). If those show up try unplugging the usb device, run tail -f /var/log/messgaes and watch what happens when you plug the scanner/printer back in. Thats should tell you a little about whats going on. (or it could be hopelessly criptic but it's a start) :-)
good luck.

When I run lsmod I get the following:

Code:
Unknown line at line 58
Unknown line at line 2296
Unknown line at line 2297
...
Unknown line at line 2335
cannot open /proc/bus/usb, No such file or directory (2)

With grep I found no usb comments, either with

dmesg | grep usb

or

grep usb /var/log/messages

I've checked /proc/bus/ and there's only a pci folder, no usb folder.

I've checked installed rpms; libusb-0.1.6-3.i386.rpm, libusb-devel-0.1.6-3.i386.rpm and usbutils-0.9-10.i386.rpm are all there.

I would highly appreciate any help on this.

Thanks,
Reven

During your "kernel updates", did you recompile the kernel? My suspicion would be that either you downloaded a kernel or you compiled a kernel that doesn't support USB. If you have the kernel sources installed you could reconfigure and recompile it. At least thats the next thing I would try.

I didn't re-compile, just let up-to-date do it's work.

Should I try to recompile it manualy?
