usb not working?

Hi, I recently built a new computer, and on my old one, I had a dual boot with Redhat 8 and XP Pro. I had used partition magic to partition the drives and everything worked fine. I just got around to installing linux (redhat 9) on my new one.

During the install, I started the graphical installation and after detecting video card and mouse I got a black screen (gf4 ti4600). I let it sit for about 10 min. and nothing happened so I reset back into XP to find out my usb mouse wasn't working. I looked at the device manager and it says no drivers are installed for the usb controller. I pulled out the motherboard driver cd and installed the usb drivers, but after rebooting, the mouse still didn't work (logitech mouseman, I also tried a logitech mx500 from the other computer). A PS/2 mouse works fine, but I'd still like to be able to use usb devices ;)

Has anyone heard of this problem?

Welcome to LQ :)

Moving to Linux - Hardware

That sounds really odd... Is your USB a PCI card, or integrated on the motherboard?

Cool

Hi! Recently I had a similar problem on an EPoX 8K5A2+. I was running WinXP (USB working fine) and wanted to try out Slackware 9.0. After installing Slack, WinXP failed to find anything on USB, not even after a cold reset. USB devices simply weren't getting power under WinXP! Slack on the other hand managed to power them up. Unplugging the power cord for a minute did the trick (?!) and USB under WinXP was back. The problem returned after every Linux session. I'm a newbie and have never tried to compile a custom kernel (I know, no excuses :) but with Slack8.1 everything was OK. I guess something changed in Slack's default USB kernel between 2.4.18 and 2.4.20...
