USB mouse, works in kernel 2.4.18, not in 2.4.21 or 2.4.22

I have a laptop which is running debian (sarge), I have recently upgraded the kernel from 2.4.18 to 2.4.22 to tacke advantage of acpi and now I can't get the mouse to work..
the mouse is detected ok:
Sep 7 23:36:28 zeus kernel: usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:1d.0-1 address 2
Sep 7 23:36:30 zeus kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.0-1, assigned address 3
Sep 7 23:36:30 zeus kernel: hiddev0: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB Optical Mouse] on usb1:3.0
however it doesn't work!
if I boot back to bf24 kernel it works!
kernel 2.4.22 modules are the same (ie usbcore hid usbmouse usb-uhci) as bf24.

I am at a loss as to what I have done wrong, can anybody help?

Ben.

Does the device exist in the same place (like /dev/usbmouse or /dev/usb/) as before? If not, you might have to change the device entry in XFree86-Config.

hmm.. it seems to be...

if I cat /dev/input/mice nothing happens..
if i do this in kernel 2.4.18 it gives out lots of funny charachters.

if iI cat /dev/usb/mouse0 (in kernel 2.4.22) it returns that no device is present.
ditto for all other /dev/usb/mouse numbers.
ditto for all /dev/input/mouse numbers.

very odd...

I had it all working before my harddrive failed, which makes it really annoying!
I really must start backing up my configurations...

I had a very similar problem which I solved by recompiling the kernel with
CONFIG_INPUT=y rather than CONFIG_INPUT=m.

Hope this helps
