USB mouse problems in Slackware 9

I was reading the previous topic on this subject, but it didn't help. I've read the USB Mouse HOWTO at http://vanguard.submoron.org/docs/USBMOUSE-HOWTO.html

I'm on an Intel P4 system, and I'm attempting to install Slackware to VMware. I've finished the install, and it recognizes my USB keyboard, but when I attempt to startx, it tells me the device isn't found. I checked the HOWTO, and I followed the instructions. It says there is no such module as usb-uhci or usb-ohci, so I'm wondering if that might be the problem. I try running gpm, and it will start, and if it's using either imps2 or exps2 is shows a filled in block, as if I had clicked on that area. However, I can't move and it doesn't do anything. Can anyone help? Thanks
