USB mouse/KVM issue with Slackware

Hey guys,

I just installed a fresh version of Slackware 10.1 on my workstation and ran into a strange problem - it seems that my regular, run-of-the-mill Logitech optical USB mouse is simply not detected by Linux.

My mouse and my keyboard are both connected to their respective ports on a USB hub on my KVM switch. Now, when I boot Slackware, the keyboard is detected and works without a hitch but the darn mouse simply doesn't seem to be. /usr/sbin/gpm doesn't report any errors on the boot up either and everytime I start X11, my mouse cursor is stuck in the middle of the screen and I can't move the bloody thing. /dev/mouse points to /dev/psaux.

Keep in my that this is a fresh install of Linux, so I haven't toyed around with the kernel, /usr/sbin/lsmod shows pretty much all USB modules loaded and I've tried to change the "Protocol" value of /etc/X11/xorg.conf to "IMPS/2", "PS/2", "Auto", you name it.

I'm at a loss. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

I also have the exact same problem. I have no issues with other distros.

Well, judging by the lack of responses for this thread, no one really knows what the heck is going on. I guess I'll have to try Debian or something...

That is what I have done.

If you have a 64 bit AMD, then I suggest you try Slamd64.

Otherwise Arch is very nice

When you run xorgconfig, try setting up your path to your mouse as /dev/input/mice.

I see there hasn't been a post on this in a few months but I felt it necessary to add my two cents.

For about a month, I've been tackling this issue with KVM's and my multiplatform system. (One Windows box, one Slackware Box, and one Mac) When I had my Belkin 2 port kvm between the Windows dual boot with Slack and the Mac, all was well. When I added the dedicated Linux box, I upgraded to a Belkin Soho 4 port USB. To make the story short, the Mac only worked with the USB connection from the KVM, the Linux box just plain didn't work. I tried everything; I browsed Google and this site for a month trying everything to ge the Slackware to work with the KVM but no luck. I even tried three other distros on the Linux box and they all had the same problem: the mouse would go haywire if you switched to another port and back. (I'll admit, the trick with using F5 before you switch and F7 when you switch back works, but only some of the time.) To point, with my KVM switch, Linux sucks.

The solution turned out to be simple and convenient for my situation: I simply use VNC to remote in to the Linux machiine. Since I have dual monitors, it makes it extremely convenient to just set up the VNC session in the second screen and I have no issues with the mouse going crazy.

Simple, no? After doing my research, I've deduced from my experience and other's that KVM makers and Linux just don't get along and I'm glad I found a solution without purching another switch that probably wouldn't work anyway.

Just my thoughts.

Thankyou for posting your experience. I am glad you didn't just dump this thread because you had a few issues. Cheers to you for sharing and I am glad you found a solution. Pity Slack couldn't do it. Maybe in the future hmmmm?
