USB Mouse Freezes

Hi Everyone,

I've tried this question on other forums and googled it, but so far, no luck.

I have a Medion MD96340 Other Model # WAM 2070. It has 2GB ram, 160 sata, nVidia GeForce 6150. The touchpad works find, but is too slow even at the fastest setting. I prefer a trackball anyway. I use the Kensington Orbit Optical trackball. In Windows, they have a driver with lots of nice adjustments. So I can get it performing the way I like. In *nix, the built in acceleration settings, etc., is enough to get the comfort I like. The problem is not with the OS, though. It does this no matter which OS I use. At times, it freezes up. Usually for 1-2 seconds, sometimes 5-10. I can immediately move my hand to the touchpad, and it responds instantly, though if I go back to the Orbit, it may still be frozen. I suspect it must be with the fact that the USB bus simply cannot handle that many devices. How many? PC Wizard 2008 (cpuid.org) tells me my keyboard is USB, and I know the mouse, printer and my flash drives are USB, so that's four devices at one time. Oh for a PS/2 mouse connection on this laptop! Any ideas? Thanks.

Terry

I had erratic performance with my touchbad on my Ubuntu laptop. I eventually realized that it was caused by the cpu policy being set to "dynamic" rather than "performance".

If your OS is throttling the CPU to save power / heat, you may end up with latent input device problems.

Thanks. That sounds real helpful. If I can find that setting, I'll be glad to change it. The power settings for Windows are set to never turn anything off when connected to external power. Thanks again.
