Question USB mouse doesn't work

I just install linux 7.3 on my new dell PC for have a old progrom needed run in this version. Both USB keyboard and mouse are used.
When i try to start Xwindows, the error information shows that can't find device /dev/mouse. So i insert mousedev in module, now X windows can start but the mouse still not work. Anyone can help on this. Thanks

I have configure the kernel, let is support the USB and human interface device, both is installing as modules. Then i plug in my mouse and check the /proc/bus/usb/devices and noticed that no mouse is shown here, only the keyboard is shown, is that mean the mouse is not sensed by the kernel? How could i handle this, anyone have experience on this? Thanks a lot
