Does the mouse light up, that is, does it look like it is drawing power from the USB port. For some odd reason, on my Dell laptop (running Fedora Core 1), one of the two USB ports only works with my mouse on occasion (when it is not working the mouse does not light up), but I have been successful in simply moving the mouse to the other USB port and it seems to resolve the problem that I have.

If you are not this lucky I would suggest reviewing your dmesg file (/var/log/dmesg) file to see if your system is picking up the mouse (it might help to grep for USB).
