usb mouse can move but click does nothing: ubuntu 5.04

hi
first of all, i'm tellin' U, i'm a complete newbie! so if i ask stupid Questions dont blame me!!
i'm using ubuntu 5.04 for 2 days right now! but i have a problem. i can move my mouse and its fine in this, but when i do click on something it does nothing, like i havent even clicked! the mouse is a usb one. and for more info, the keyboard is fine and working properly.
i saw the other topics about similar problems but they didnt work for me! please dont say: try newer versions.
i'll wait for an answer!

Go to console. Run

Code:

cat /dev/input/mice

. Move mouse. Some random characters should appear. Click. Does it any characters on screen? Be careful not to move mouse. Also post xorg.conf .

ok you do not want to install the latest ubuntu? i will not tell you to go and do so anyway (although it might solve your problem) but why are you running such an old version? i am running gutsy and it is rock solid. with you being a newbie it does not make sense running older versions as newer versions are newbie friendlier and more polished. bottom line: i can't help you.
