hey. i am have redhat linux 9.0 and i am trying to setup me USB modem for a dial up conncection. i have a swann v.90 usb modem. i have done a desktop install and i dont know if the default gui it uses is KDE or gnome or something else (it has a redhat icon on the control panel thing). it has a internet connection wizard under system setting on the main menu and i have tried using this but it cant autodetect my modem. i read somewhere that you have to recompile the kernel with usb support or something, if anyone could help me out it would be great. (i have hardly any knowledge about linux so you might have to spell it out if you want me to do something). thanks.
I doubt you need to recompile the kernel for USB support (the default installation would have enabled it). However USB modems are not well supported by Linux, and the few that don't work are complex to set up. Nonetheless since I've set one up myself give me the model number of your modem and I'll try to find some information on it - is it one of these? http://www.swann.com.au/products/mod...usb/ms_usb.htm
I've been looking around and by the looks of it your modem is supported hardware within Linux (as I said before, USB modems aren't very well supported). Hope I at least saved you some time looking around.
how do you suggest i set it up? it doesnt detect it when i start linux like it does with normal external modems (i have tried one and it works fine, i cant use it permanently tho) and i have tried using a general modem on all 4 ports but none of them work
As I said, I don't think it will work with Linux - looks like you've got to buy a new one that Linux supports. The reason for this is not the fault of Linux, it is because hardware developers are only ever going to make drivers and manuals relating to Linux if Linux has enough users to justify the expenditure. So until enough people are using Linux (currently 2% of all desktop users do approximately, which is not enough) the hardware manufacturers won't make drivers. Looks like a better question for you to ask on here is what router people recommend for Red Hat 9.
