Question Problem With Usb Modem Setup

I have got mandrake 8.2

My modem is an external USB 56k dialup modem (US ROBOTICS).....

I look to a page that I was told and it said to use
mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM0 c 166 0 etc to setup my USB modem..

I tried it but it did not work and when I looked in the /dev/usb/ directory it was empty...

Could some1 tell me what that means, what I need to do...(I'm a newbie don't know much about Linux)....

Is the modem broadband or dial up? The acm module wont work for a broadband modem.
