Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

USB modem

I'm running Debian 3.0 Woody RC1, kernel 2.4.18
I used this howto to install my USB 330 ADSL Alcatel modem. My modem doesn't work! I followed everything correctly and even checked it trice. I am getting the errors: "SIOCADDRT: No such device" and when I plug it in "usb device 2 is not claimed by any active driver"
The PPP daemon seems to start OK... No errors there

Do I have to configure the kernel like in here (incl. hotplugging)????

HELP!!!! I just want to use this Linux as a router.. but I can't get my USB modem to work... I'm desperate!

I'm using Mandrake 9.1, and this modem was pretty easy to set up, even for a newbie like myself.
You need to make sure your USB is working ok, usbview is helpful for this. Are the two lights green? If not, then maybe your USB isn't working and you should fix that for a start.
You need a copy of the Alcatel's microcode, it is called mgmt.o
Then you need to upload the microcode with

modem_run -f /path/to/mgmt.o

The modem lights should flash as the microcode is uploaded.

Your /etc/ppp/chap-secrets & pap-secrets files need to have details of your login and password.

then you connect with

pppd call adsl

That's about it.

ifconfig should give you the details of your connection.

Hope this helps.
