USB media no longer working
Hi folks
Ive come across this problem and having a trawl round Google its obvious its a common one! Please dont feel im being disrespectful but I also think that without exception everyone has misunderstood the actual problem! My problem is that I used a USB memory pen to transfer some files from one hard drive to another. I did this by mounting this from the command line and copying the files from a terminal window. When I re started Linux (FC6) in full blown graphical mode, USB devices (memory pens and an ipod) no longer appear as a shortcut on the desktop when I plug them in. They dont appear in /dev so obviously I cant mount them from a terminal window. The reason that I dont think people have understood this problem is because I have also seen this in Windows (I manage a network at school). On a windoze machine, when a user has messed up a driver install when they first plugged the USB device in, it wont recognise it at all. This used to happen a lot, but after a few service packs and some better drivers from suppliers, the problem is getting rarer. On the windoze system, I would goto control panel, open up the system applet and look at the hardware devices attached. I would browse through the USB devices, and delete them all. Because windoze is plug and play it them trundles off and reinstalls all of them, including the correct un messed up driver for the pen drive that had caused the problem. I believe that the solution on a linux is along similar lines. Either I need to delete the USB devices, wherever they are, or restart the SCSI system? Im swimming in deep water here, my knowledge of linux is only just better than a newbie although I would class my knowledge of system architecture as a little above that. Can anyone help? Hopefully my comments may trigger a solution from some of you maore knowledgable guys! Thanks in advance! Phil |

Have you changed anything recently? Do you have the right USB modules installed ( lsmod | grep usb ) Is there any mention of usb things being recognised when you plug in a USB stick (look at the last few lines of /var/log/messages or try dmesg ) |
USB devices not working properly
Hi
Thanks for the reply. No I dint umount the USB, could that have caused the problem? I had assumed that Fedora would umount them when I shut down. If this is the case, do I just reboot into that fedora and umount them? How would this explain the fact that USB devices arent been recognised - not even listed in /dev? When i first installed Fedora (2nd time round) USB would hot plug just fine. They appeared as an icon on the desktop and I could just pull them out and that would be fine. Im at work now on a windoze machine, but Ill have a look see tonight! Phil |
