USB Maxtor 100GB freezes system

Hi,
I tried to use a vfat 100GB maxtor one touch usb-disk on my Suse 9.2 system.

It mounts in /media/(number)but when I tried to access the disk the system locks/freezes completely.

I rebooted the PC but I get a freeze everytime I try to access the maxtor.

It works fine with windows XP and W2K.

How do I solve this ?

Best regards,

Some USB 2.0 devices don't seem to work with linux. You can try SuSE 9.3 or 10.0 and see if a newer kernel might work. Maxtor uses an USB interface that for some reason is not compatible with linux usb-storage.o. I don't know if this is presently the case, but it has been a problem with Maxtor USB drives in the past.

strange

This is very strange as I have 2 machines with Suse 9.2 and one works fine with the maxtor and the other one just freezes solid.

Both are updated each month with yast.

So any suggestions anyone ??

Don't know your product. Does it have it's own power supply? Connected directly to your PC or through a usb hub? If latter, powered hub or non-powered hub?

Maxtor usb

The maxtor has it's own power supply - it is a seperate unit which is connected directly to the pc..

Thanks in advance,
