USB keyboard not working at all

I just installed Fedora Core 4 on my NEC LaVie laptop. I hate the keyboard on the laptop though, so I connected an external keyboard. I connect it to a USB port (through a PS/2 - USB adapter), but now Linux has this to say when the keyboard is connected:

hub 1-0:1.0: Cannot enable port 2. Maybe the USB cable is bad.

This message is displayed during startup. So what does this mean? There really is something wrong with my cable? Or am I lacking something in the software?

Thanks for any help!
Best regards, Fredrik

Does the keyboard work on another machine, or maybe if you boot to a different OS? How about the USB port, does anything else work ok in it? I am not a big linux buff but those are certainly worth a shot to narrow down any possibilities, maybe the experts can give you some real help shortly.

Oh yeah, the USB port is ok. If I plug in my USB mouse, it is working without a problem. My question really is: is Fedora Core 4 supposed to directly sense and switch to a USB keyboard (over the internal keyboard) when I connect my keyboard?
