USB Jumpdrive causes file manager freeze with Mandrake 10.1 KDE ?

Hi all,

I am a new Linux user, fresh from the Windoze scene and am trying to get Mandrake 10.1 all configured for my HP zd7168cl laptop. It's been a real bear since it's got a widescreen monitor and thus required a custom modeline and blah blah blah. Anyway, I digress.

Having gotten most of the harware drivers installed and configured it's time for the pendrive. It seems to function properly in KDE 3.2.x (not sure of the x) running on the 2.6.8.1-12mdksmp kernel. Plug it in, the light flashes, it shows up in /dev and I can access the files from /mnt/removable. Remove the drive, and the /mnt/removable sticks around, but I imagine this is normal behavior for mounts?

As for the graphical environment, if "Home" is opened BEFORE inserting the Jumpdrive, no problems, I can browse to and access the files. If I try to open another file manager or the drive is inserted before I open the first file manager, the manager never opens. Also, the acpi module in the system tray seems to freeze.

A "soft boot" (ctrl-alt-f1 + service dm stop + startx) resolves the freeze, but if the jumpdrive is left in the slot, it is not re-mounted. Removing and re-inserting the jumpdrive causes a repeat of the above.

And while I'm on the subject, is there a way to make an icon appear on the desktop when the jumpdrive is inserted?

In short, what's going on and how do I fix it?

P.S., perhaps I should mention that if I add -- Option "NvAgp" "3" -- to the XF86Config file for AGP support, the same thing happens. The file manager won't open and the acpi module dissapears from the system tray.
