USB HD locking up SuSE 9.3 Server

At work we have an HP proliant ML 370 server running SuSE 9.3

A few months ago we got an 500 gb USB hard drive to back up to. I plugged it in and I started rsyncing to it for a month or two.

Two weekends ago on a Sunday the server just locked up. I got this error when rebooting.

"cartechdata kernel uhci_ hcd 0000:00:1d:0 host controller process error, something bad happened!

cartechdata kernel uhci_ hcd 0000:00:1d:0 host controller halted, very bad! "

This happened 4 times, the last number went from 0 above to 3.

Now yesterday while rsyncing to the USB drive it locked up again. When it rebooting I couldn't find the error messages so I finished up the rsync.

Of course, today during my noon rsync backup it all locked up again.

Any ideas on what's going on?

Have you tried that usb drive on another machine? It's possible that the usb drive controller is faulty and fails under sustained load.

But locking up the entire server?

I just can't see how a faulty usb HD could lock up the entire server. But it's odd that it worked for over a month without a problem, perhaps it is a hardware problem.

Thanks!
