USB hard drive enclosure

Hi everyone,

I'm using an NEC hard drive enclosure and I can mount it just fine. THe problem is if i use it long enough, I get i/o errors and I can't read from the drive anymore. Then if I unplug it and plug it back again, it gets assigned a new name (/dev/sd?) and i can read from it again. Then it just dies again minutes after. I use it for days on end in windows and it works all right.

here's a bit of what's in /var/log/messages:

Code:

SCSI error : <4 0 0 0> return code = 0x70000
end_request: I/O error, dev sdd, sector 41962054
SCSI error : <4 0 0 0> return code = 0x70000
end_request: I/O error, dev sdd, sector 41962055
hub 2-0:1.0: port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...
usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 7
usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8
scsi5 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 8
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
scsi4 (0:0): rejecting I/O to dead device

Vendor: FUJITSU  Model: MHS2030AT        Rev: 8004
Type:  Direct-Access                      ANSI SCSI revision: 02
SCSI device sde: 58605120 512-byte hdwr sectors (30006 MB)
sde: assuming drive cache: write through

I've tried running scandisk, badblocks, fsck.msdos and none of them report any physical problems. Anyone have an idea what's going on?

If you google your error message "SCSI error" "return code = 0x70000" you will see quite a few reports, so it sounds like a USB bug.

Upgrading to the latest kernel is always worth a try.

Yep, So far everything i've read points to it being a bug. And i was hoping a 2.6.12 kernel was recent enough. Thank you for your input.
