usb hard drive
 

i have problem with usb hard drive on linux only ( it work fine in windows xp)
linux can find usb hard drive but whenever i try to open it, it give me this error "could not enter folder /media/usb-storage-odd-ProlificTechnologyInc-MassStorageDevice:0;0;0p1"

so how can i use my usb hard drive on Linux
btw its 40g one

is it ntfs or some other hd nicely formatted by MS?

if it is ntfs the system automounts it read-only with uid root....

no its fat32 that was formated in windows xp

what mount cmd are you using, is there an output from that command and does the mounted location get a special mod?

It looks like this thread may have been discontinued, but I'll give it a go anyway.
I am having exactly the same problem as kennycc. When I plug my big 300G usb hard drive into my SuSE9.1Personal box it recognises that a usb mass storage device has been plugged in, and it asks me if I would like to open it.
I don't have to mount it myself! Sure, why not!
But I get exactly the same error has kennycc. I can't read it in konqueror, or at the command-line, so I don't think it is a problem with permissions.
If someone could tell me what I should be looking for, or where I should go in Yast to get this thing started, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm not sure if SuSE is using hotplug, but it looks like it. Do the log file "messages" post anything about the mount procedure anyhow? If so, does your /etc/mtab contain anything about your hd?

Hi, I run SuSE 9.1 Professional and I have the same problem, with one little difference. The first time I plugged the hd into my computer it worked fine! Subsequently I plugged the hd into a different desktop (running XP Professional) where it worked fine. Any later attempts to make the hd work on Linux were unsuccessfull and gave me the following message. "Could not enter folder /media/usb-storage-odd-0x05e3-0x0702:0:0:0p1"
I did not change any system configuration but I installed all regular security updates from SuSE.
