Angry USB flash pen/stick/card cannot access

Sorry to post ANOTHER usb memory card stick question ...

I have a TOPBAND 256 mg usb Flash memory pen/stick running RedHat 8. I know the system can see it but I cannot figure out how to access it ... please can someone advise me further.

The usb pen was sold as Linux Compatable (yes my kernal version supports it).

Heres lots of config stuff...

I have a USB Controller installed

running cat /proc/pci | grep -i usb returns:-

USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 1).

my modules.conf file also contains:-

alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394

running mount yields (amongst other things):-

usbdevfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw)

I tried running DMESG and it said it had initialised the USB mass storage driver, registered usb.c, and also that a new USB device was connected on bus1/2, assigned device number 3.

I have HotPlug installed too.

I know the system can see the USB pen and i'm fairly sure its happy with it. I just cannot figure out what steps I need to take in order to be able to mount the drive in the usual fashion --- Any Ideas ... its driving me nuts.

Check to see if you have any scsi drives available?
ls -l /dev/sd*
If you do, then one of them will be your memory stick.
Mount it with (as root, firstly):
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash
(make sure the directory /mnt/flash exists first).

If this works, then you can go and edit your /etc/fstab file to make the options permanent.

Ok I tried running ls -l /dev/sd*

and the output was HUGE --- which one am I looking for?

02

I know its there somewhere, I just cannot figure out how to FIND or learn where the device might be?

I looked in /proc/scsi too and there are directories for usb-storage-0 (which is empty) and a file named scsi which when I run

cat/proc/scsi/scsi yields:-

Attached Devices:
Host: scsi0 CHannel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vender: USB Model: Flash Drive Rev: 1.11
Type Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision:

D'oh! Sorry, I am so used to using devfs that I forget that this can happen. On my system it only shows up the devices actually present - yours will show all the possible devices! Sorry.

Do you have any scsi disks? If not, then it is likely to be /dev/sda. And the partition you want is likely to be /dev/sda1.

You can check by (as root) type in fdisk -l (that was a lowercase L by the way). Oh, and do this after you have plugged in the pen/flash disk.

Make sense?

Do:
Plug in pendrive.
As root type fdisk -l and look at output - look for anything that say /dev/sdXX.
As root, make a directory onto which you'll be mounting your drive mkdir /mnt/flashdrive
As root, mount that disk - likely to be mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/flashdrive
Presuming you get no error messages, check to see if you have any files there!
If you can see files, then you need to edit your fstab so that you can mount your pendrive easily rather than using this method. But we'll cover that later...

Good luck.

First up thanks for that amazingly clear information!

Second --- no luck yet

running fdsik -l yielded:-

(left a few bits blank to prevent clutter)

/dev/hda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 14 6 FAT16
/dev/hda3 275 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 1403 f Win 95 Ext'd (lba)
/dev/hda5 1403 82 Linux Swap

I know its there --- dmesg says it is and also KDE has this app which shows USB devices which I found, its pretty useless too but it does say that a USB flash drive is present and gives a long serial number (but nothing seemingly useful)

Dont Stop Yet!!!!!!! Almost there !
