Angry USB Flash memory

I posted a thread a while ago (11th Oct) but got zero replies. Here are some more details:

I have Win2K/Linspire dual boot system. I use an ancient and unmarked USB flash memory to transfer data between various Win2K/XP systems without any problems. Win2K tells me the FS is FAT.

I tried it with Knoppix 3.6 and was surprised to find it did not work. I tried the Wiki and various previous questions and other sites. This was all too technical for me so I tried it with Linspire.

I get the following entries in the Linspire Control Panel:

Partions
Device - none
Mount Point - /proc/bus/usb
FS Type - usbdevfs

USB Devices
USB OHC1 Root Hub(2)
USB Storage Device
Microsoft Intellimouse Optical

Serial # 0AEC301000001A00
Class 0 (Interface)
USB Version 1.16
Vendor ID 0xaec
Product ID 0x5010
Revision 1.16
Speed 12 Mbits/sec

I presume this little lot implies that the system found my USB device but failed to identify the FAT partition.

Does anyone know what I should do from here as the Linspire help gives out at the point where Device=none?

If anyone would like to find my original post and answer it, it would be appreciated.

In the future, if you post a question that does not get replies, you can just bump it (meaning that you post a reply to it yourself). That is preferable to starting a new, duplicate thread on the same topic. -- J.W.
