uSB External Hard Drive Mounts Very Slowly

I am running 2.6.23-gentoo-r3 on a Dell Latitude D520. HAL version is 0.5.10 and is compiled with the following flags:

Code:

sys-apps/hal-0.5.10  USE="acpi apm crypt -debug -dell -disk-partition -doc -laptop (-selinux)"
My problem is that my external hard drive takes a very long time to mount. As soon as I plug in my external hard drive nautilus pops up but then instead of displaying the files stored in the hard drive it goes all black and remains so for nearly 10-15 seconds and then it displays the files stored in the hard drive. Have not experienced this problem before, when I was using Ubuntu. Recently made the switch to Gentoo and am afraid that maybe somewhere somehow something is not compiled with the correct USE flags. Any help would be appreciated.

My hard drive is a Lacie External 250 GB (Samsung SP2514N) and the partition type is FAT32.

If anyone knows the solution to this problem, I would be thankful to him/her for their help.

Cheers
Rahul
