USB Drives showing up as read only in Knoppix 4.0.2

I am using KNOPPIX 4.0.2 booting from CD, and am trying to use an external USB drive, an Iomega 250GB drive, to back up a computer before reformating the internal HD and reloading the computer's OS. Unfortunately, any partition on this drive comes up as read-only, and I am not allowed to change the permissions. I have not been able to find out any reason why I cannot use this disk (or any USB drive) as read-write.

Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Assuming the USB drive is not NTFS, you probably need to add a umask parameter to the mount command, something like this

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/somedir -o gid=100,umask=002
