USB Drive Compatibility

Does anyone know if this 64GB PNY attache USB drive would work out of the box with linux?

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...893&CatId=3787

The PNY website says they don't support linux, but I have a 16GB PNY drive that worked out of the box no problems so I'm not sure what to think.

It is just a flash drive - should work on any O/S.

I see no reason why a properly constructed USB storage device should not work under Linux. If it does not then it must have been deliberately made either to not work with Linux or in some way to not meet specifications.
So, my advice would be not to buy it since PNY are either not mentioning Linux due to a faulty device or not mentioning Linux because they feel it politic not to.

I have used PNY memory cards successfully under GNU/Linux, so I would think so.

Although if the website says they don't support "Linux" [sic], then I would suggest that you shouldn't support them -- quid pro quo.

I feel I ought to admit, at this point, that as far as storage devices go I don't pay any attention at all to Linux support detailed in specifications and the like and buy what seems to fit my criteria best. My reasoning being that, as above, if it's not useable under Linux it's not following specifications and, thus, is not fit for purpose and a refund would be forthcoming.

"Not supported in Linux" means that the company won't give technical support to people who want to use the product in Linux. It doesn't necessarily mean that the product won't work in Linux.

yes i think they script their call center personnel to troubleshoot windows issues (i.e.- click on the start menu, rite-clik control panel, left-clik, my computer, ...) including linux, mac os, chrome-os, ... instructions mite be too cost prohibitive for them.

a hard drive is a hard drive is a hard drive so it should work on any type of computer.

Will it work in linux? Yes it can be made to work would be my guess 100% positive.

Now, will it work in your system as a boot device? Maybe 99%+ chance. (assumes your system is newish)

Will it fully support any linux filesystem at rated speeds? Maybe 97% or more chance.

Some usb flash controllers simply don't like the timings used in the drivers for usb in linux.

Some very old usb's were tricky to get to boot sometimes.

That link doesn't seem to work at my house for some odd reason. I've bought a number of things at tigerdirect.

Thank you all for your feedback, especially dugan and schneidz, I hadn't considered that the PNY site was talking about their tech support teams this would explain why the 16GB drive I already have works without any issues.

I also did just find on the pendrivelinux website that PNY is a recommended brand too. Again thanks to all of you for taking the time to give me some feedback on this.

... i had an issue with a myessentials usb-wifi adapter and before i can get an rma for it, their tech support staff needed to create a ticket.
the support agent kept repeating 'click on the start menu and select control panel'. i kept having to interrupt them and explain that i was using fedora linux. but i beleive they didnt know what it was because they told me to close all programs and go to the desktop.
they transferred me up to a level 2 agent and i had to explain to them that not all pc's have to run microsoft windows as an operating system.
30 minutes later i got my rma.

i got another tech support agent (i forget what the hardware was) that actually knew what linux was and was a ubuntu user. but they told me they had no support instructions for linux and told me they couldnt help me.
