USB device plugged in at boot is not detected

Hello,
if a usb device is plugged in at boot I need to unplug and re-plug for it to be detected. As far as I know I've installed hotplug and gnome-volume-manager packages. I'm using debian etch with gnome. Can anyone advise what I need to do.Thanks.

Are you sure it doesn't show up in places/computer?. My Ubuntu is a virtual machine inside of Windows, so I can't test your situation.
My other systems use KDE, the drive won't be mounted at boot-up, but an icon for it is in System through an icon on the desktop, just click on it and it gets mounted, then cruise through it's directories.
