i'm not sure why it happened but one day my usb stick stopped working but i managed to fix it for now. think this is the same problem you are having here was my output from dmesg : device not accepting address 2, error -110
first check if ehci-hcd is inserted by running (thats the usb 2.0 module)
$ cat /proc/modules
then remove all the usb modules and reinsert most of them

# modprobe -r usb-storage; modprobe -r uhci; modprobe -r ehci-hcd
# modprobe usb-storage; modprobe uhci

after that it worked fine once again i have no idea how it happened or how to fix it the right way i just got rid of usb 2.0 to fix it (its better than no usb-storage)
