USB Device extender ethernet

Hi,
Does anyone have any experience with usb device server or usb device extender?
the idea sounds great. accessing usb devices over the network.
i'm looking at one of these:
http://www.lindy.com/4-port-usb-2-ov...ver/42832.html

what i haven't figures out yet is how it actually works. does it actually extend the usb (via the network) to the host computer as if it were plugged in directly ?

thanks in advance.

Welcome to Linux Questions.

It is a server and not a bus extender so think of it as being analogous to sharing printers and files between computers except you are using a standalone device. It does not support keyboards, mice, wifi etc.

I'm not sure if this server is compatible with linux.

Yes they do.

Some of these devices are OS independent. Like a vpn.

Check that the one you wish is independent.

Look at maybe this instead. http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimit.../dp/B000NOAHS8
