usb device descriptor read / 64, error -71 problem

I get this error and the usb ports are suspended. I've setting the /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend file to -1 or 0 but after reboot, it always comes back with 2.

I've also tried setting /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/old_scheme_first to Y but that keeps getting reset to N after reboot.

I don't want to reinstall the OS or anything, just want to see how to get the usb ports to start working again. Is there anything else I can do that doesn't resort to installing or reinstalling files?

I got kernal 2.6.23

I found a fix. I found that this worked:

modprobe -r ehci_hcd

now i need to make this permanent because it resets when the server is rebooted. At least now people may know how to fix this problem.

I tried different ways to remove it in the modprobe.conf:

remove ehci_hcd /sbin/modprobe -r ehci_hcd
blacklist ehci_hcd
alias ehci_hcd off

I tried adding it to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist:

blacklist ehci_hcd

none seems to work after I reboot.

I found one way that works but it's not the solution I really like. It's adding the modprobe -r ehci_hcd into the /etc/rc.local file.

I'm guessing that the modprobe.conf editing and the blacklist does not work because the module must be hardcoded in the kernel somehow. Thanks for listening.
