Question usb cdwriter in kernel 2.6.9

Hello there,

Since upgrading my kernel to version 2.6.9 my external usb ASUS cdwriter stopped "working". I used to mount it under /dev/scd0.

Being a linux newbie I really don't know where to start looking. I did try to unplug and plug in the device while checking /var/log/messages and got the following line in the file:

Jan 8 11:33:29 assatron kernel: usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using address 6

I assume it means that it at least recognizes that something was plugged in soemwhere.

This problem occurs both under Slackware 10 Dropline and under Fedora core 3, both running kernel 2.6.9

Any help is appreciated, in the meanwhile I'll keep googling.

Thanx
P

You could try doing a:
# cdrecord -scanbus
to see whether you can find you cd writer in that list...

Running cdrecord -scanbus (under root)renders the following result:

Cdrecord 2.00.3 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.

It doesn't seem like it finds it.

Thanx

I also had a similar problem some time but can't remember what I did (doh!).

Anyway, have tried mounting it under hdc or hdd instead?

It might also be so that you're not having SCSI emulation support in your kernel.
