USB Cable Modem
Hello everybody
I am new as of yesterday when I first installed Mandrake Linux 9.1. My problem is this I have a USB cable modem with no network card or ethernet card and I can't get Mandrake to recognise this, it only recognises either the network card or the ethernet card and I have neither my cable modem is an ethernet adapter and I don't know if Mandrake has the drivers available to install the Terayon TJ210 cable modem without a card. I have the drivers for Windows but I can't connect to the internet on Mandrake to look for any updates also I have a list of 14 other things [ NOT DEFINED ] including my sound card and Root Hub I guess that means that they are not useable. Can someone help me please Thank You

This may or may not work.
Run Mandrake Control Centre, and Network/Internet module.
Run Internet "Wizard". In Expert mode.
When it does not detect your USB modem say you have another one and pick CDCether from the list. CDCether is the driver for USB Ethernet connections, but does not get autodetected by Mandrake.

You e-mail is really confusing to me.. but I'll give this a try..
You have a Terayon TJ210 with both a USB and an ethernet connection (RJ45).
One computer with Mandrake 9.1 with without a Network Card, but with USB.
You are trying to connect the usb Terayon to the usb on your computer...
If this is right.. I don't believe their are any drivers that will support this. I did a quick google... and didn't find anything ether.
I would go to your local computer store, and by yourself a network card for you computer. I like 3com, but have used Intel, and Linksys.. and all have worked fine. You could also go to your local used computer shops.. and find cheap cards... or contact your local LUG.. and see if someone has a know good one laying around.
Then you would need either a null-network cable, or a 2 regular network cable and hub/switch.
I think you'll be much happier, Linux or windows, with using a network card in your computer. If you use the USB connection, the "driver" is really a software driver... and takes CPU time and memory., and for right now their are only windows based software drivers.. I'm sure that sometime in the future their will be software dirvers for linux as well... ??but why??

To the writer davecs
I tried the method that you suggested and sorry to report no joy
In the control panel \ hardware list in the list is unknown device or something like that. the description of the modem is
.............................
Vendor: (null)
Bus: USB
Module: Unknown [ in red type]
Media Class Communications
Ethernet Working
...............................
Even after following your tips after selecting from the list the CDCether choice it still can't find the Ethernet device, so it is looking like I need to have a network card or an Ethernet card installed. I think that I have the other cable for the modem The cable modem is not mine it is part of the broadband internet
package from my ISP. So with 2 cables it must be able to work on either and the cable modem works fine on windows and I was hoping to get away from Billionaire Gates & co Hee-Hee
Thank You for the help and sorry that it didn't work

Sorry!
When I originally set up Mandrake this worked for me, after my Cable Modem connected via USB was not detected. Since then I have changed computer and connected it via Ethernet and my Ethernet card is not supported! Whilst looking through the list I get when I tried the above procedure I noticed there are other USB alternatives further down. You could try one of them perhaps? If it doesn't work, and your modem can plug either through Ether or USB, it is probably best to try Ether. Unless you have an nVidia on-board ether like me....
It is probably that nVidia has not yet released the Mandy9.1 version of its nvnet driver yet. I understand that all nVidia drivers are Kernel specific and Mandrake uses a modified kernel (due to Supermount).
I am having to "net" with Windows 98SE (dual boot) until nVidia pull their fingers out on this one!
