USB 2.0 and external harddisk crash

Hello,

I'm having an Asus motherboard A7N8X-X, using Gentoo Linux with kernel 2.4.20-r7 and experience some anoying problem.

I have this external harddisk which is in fact a 2,5' in some USB 2.0 box (more specifically an Enermax EHD-251).

When I plug the disk I can actually mount it and can even read from it, yet after some time my entire computer just gives up. The sreen hangs and nothing works anymore.

Does anybody has an idea what might be the problem?

Thanks a lot,

Martijn

hmm, maybe a power issue? Does the HDD use an external powersupply?

Thanks for your answer,

No, the power supply is done by USB as well. Though there is that PS2 cable that might be used for power supply but i didn't needed that on other systems so that is not a thing I would have thought of. I might try that indeed.

furthermore i have some external CD writer USB 2.0 (with external power supply) as well that works perfectly (or nearly) and that doesnt hang the system, so you might be right. I will try, thanks anyway,

Martijn
