As I had problems & problems with Conexant HSF software modem, I decided to buy US Robotics hardware modem because I heard it's one of best modems for Linux.
Aswell, I have Mandrake 10.1 with 2.6 kernel [default] and modem US Robotics 5661B [56k hardware]. MDK doesn't recognize modem, when I go to Control Center > Hardware, it says that it's Unknown device on PCI. I tried to reinstall Mandrake, but nothing. When I try to connect via KPPP it tells me that modem is ready [I tried on many ports, and 2-3 of them were ready] and than stops at "Setting speaker volume..". I really have no idea what to do, so I'm here, askin for help.
P.S. I clicked on Query modem, and it said "Modem is ready."..
Sounds like you have modem and drivers installed . Follow instructions in your modem docs. I thought USR provided linux drivers for their 5660 and 5661 modems. Check and/or experiment with the settings in your Kppp configuration. Usually, the settings for a PCI modem in the device tab of the Kppp configure is :
Device /dev/modem
Flow Ctrl hardware
line term CR/LF
conn speed 115200
tick the use lock file
mod timeout 60sec
If things go nowhere ...then I recommend the following: ( this is my "stock" help answer....never mind about the drivers part)
Go DSL if you can
1. Sorry to be a downer , but..... because four or five procedures have to go off without a hitch, my suggestion is to resist the temptation to install an internal PCI modem until you are more familiar with linux. (they require specific drivers that you might find immediately..... OR...... you might look for DAYS! ) It can go easy, but more than likely it will not.
2. Make sure your ISP supports linux. ( AOL doesn't - except for Linspire or by using a special dialer). I don't mean do they tech support it, 'cause most of them don't, but does their protocol accept linux.
3. For dial up (Coppernet has given great service) go to local thrift store and buy an external serial hardware modem (NOT a USB) for about $5. Almost any older external serial port modem will work with linux and requires ....NO DRIVERS.....Believe it or not these modems can be faster than some internal PCI modems. I have an internal PCI Intel 536ep chipset modem doing file transfers at 3.2 kb/s ( I have tried dozens of init strings) while my SupraExpress that I bought at Goodwill for $3 is speeding along at about 4.7 kb/s. Yes I have installed PCI modems, but it took a loooooong time.
4. Look in the forums on how to configure the modem in Kppp (settings are a little different for serial modems)
I don't have drivers for USR, I contacted support and they told me to look at Linuxant site but there are only drivers for Conexant HSF.
Aswell, I reinstalled Mandrake and situation is worse. KPPP stops at message "Initialising Modem.." which goes after "Modem is ready." I tried to install drivers for HSF and I connected to internet but connection goes down after just 10 minutes, every time. And, when it goes down, there's no possibility to connect once more. I must reboot computer and then install drivers again. Perhaps it's because drivers are for HSF, not for USR.
And, btw, I was configuring KPPP as you wrote and my ISP supports Linux, I checked it.
It is possible that the modem setting is too high and is choking on the data stream. This can happen primarily with file transfers. Try to lower the modem speed by changing initialisation strings, or disabling the V92 feature. There are modem websites that have init strings you can try--> www.56k.com
Again, I must recommend an external serial hdwr modem for ease of use, until you get the hang of PCI modem install and configuration.
Good luck
