Urgent help - Modem

Need assistance with getting an external USR 56k modem working on a notification server. This server is set to dial out to a pager when network issues are discovered.

The server is running RedHat 7.2 with kernel 2.4.7-10. The modem is hooked upto com port 2. The server was working fine but due to hard drive issue I had to reformat the server and since the reformat I'm unable t get the modem to work.

Here's what I've done so far to try to get the modem working again.

1. create softlink from /dev/ttyS1 to /dev/modem
2. configure modem via minicom to use /dev/ttyS1
3. AT command gives OK feedback on com 2

When I attempt to test modem from minicom I get error:

CONNECTION TIMEOUT. NO CARRIER

Desperate and need HELP?????

Welcome to LQ, john316. In order to increase the chances for a swift resolution, I would ask that you do 2 things:

1. Please provide as many relevant details as possible about the technical situation. In this case, it's unclear what you mean about the "hard drive issue" and also what you mean by "reformat the server". Do you mean that you had to replace the drive, format it, then reinstall Redhat 7.2?

2. In the future, it's best not to use words such as 'Urgent' and the like in a thread title. Everyone here at LQ is volunteering their time, and will offer whatever help they can when they have a free moment, but the bottom line is that "urgent" posts get no more or less attention than any others. It is best to simply outlne the technical issue you are facing, and ask for suggestions or advice on how to solve it. Thanks. -- J.W.

In response to J.W.,

1) I had to format the hard drive then resinstall the Operating System with Redhat 7.2.

2) I now understand using the word "Urgent" is a bad idea and will no longer post with that or similar heading.

Does anyone have any ideas and/or had a similar experience.
