Have now got mandrake 9.2 CDs only

At the end of install comes up with login in the text prompt instead of Graphics interface on both laptop and desktop

Any ideas?

Try "startx" to go to the gui.

If you want the boot to go straight to a gui, edit /etc/inittab

Look for a line like this...

id:3:initdefault:

and change it to...

id:5:initdefault:

Read the comment lines in the file first.

Many thanks for your help relpying John
have installed Mandrake 9.2 instead and this seems to pickup a lot more

If you've installed the download version of mandrake then you'll need to download and install both the nvidia and ati linux drivers to their respective machines, all the instructions are in the respective readme files for each driver.

G'day Bern

Thanks
Guess what?

Installation of Mandrake 9.2 on my desktop went like a breeze
Found everything and works fine

only 2 probs are
1. Knows I have a usb Travel Flash 256kb but have to figure out how to mount it - will be far better that the floppy
2. Always takes 2 boots to get into the main screen

anyone got some ideas?

1) You'll have to set it up as a usb mass storage device, see the following for info,
http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/book1.html
2) Flakey hardware???
