UPS for multiple systems?

I am woefully ignorant when it comes to UPS. I have 11 machines that I want to keep running in the event of a power failure. Is this possible without spending thousands of dollars?

Assuming it's not, I suppose protecting the file server on my network would be a good idea. Anyone have a recommendation for a good UPS that works with Linux and will run a machine with 5 hard drives for a decent amount of time (half hour or so), and/or shut down the computer politely before the UPS goes down?

It depends on the UPS. You can normal monitor only one system with a UPS. Don't plug in your monitor to the UPS it will cause the time allowed for shutdown to be way too short. Get the correct daemon and UPS and it can stay up to about 20 minutes enough time for any script that you will create to shut down necessary services.
