ups autoshutdown my computer
 

hello:) senario: no power "blackout"...ups switch to battery after a minute ups sense low battery charge in a minute ups will have no power to continue..... is there a way to automatic shutdown my computer if ups detected a low battery before ups is totally shutdown.... iam using slackware 9.0 and 8.1 thks in adv!

APM! Check that apm is compiled in your kernel, then:
"$man apm".
And you will get enough info to start with!

Ok. . .here's one that might stump you. . getting the linux box to shutdown via the APM daemon is a snap. . . but here's the kicker. What if I have a Windoze box on my internal network that I wish to shudown as well.

Scenario:

1 UPS - 1 Linux box - 1 Windoze box

Linux box is connected to Windoze box via crossover cable. Power goes out. . . both boxes need shutting down, but only the Linux box gets the message from the UPS, since there is only one USB interface on the UPS.

Is there a way to send a broadcast message from the Linux box to get the Windoze box to shutdown as well or vice-versa?

i'm looking to do the same thing with a ups. i just read the man page on apm, and didn't see anything about shutdown--the only options were to put the system into standby or suspend. also, i still haven't got standby or suspend working yet. any suggestions as to other ways to shut down the system?

I only know of the APC UPS deamon for linux called apcupsd that has a master / slave option (don't know what kind of interface) and can be configured to shutdown the PC based on time or battery level. There is a new version that supports USB too.

Just do a web search for apcupsd for documentation and to download the deamon.

APC does proide support for linux but never have tried it out.

Not sure if any of the other UPS manufactures support linux.

I use Mandrake 9.1 and a Cyberpower 1250 and there is a link on the website to the software. Look on the manufacturers website for a link. Mine went to a University. They will usually be a tar'd and gz'd file that includes setup instructions.

The one I use is powstatd and it supports several brands and has good step by step instructions. It can be used with almost any smart or relay UPS according to the info. It includes power fail, power restore and low battery conditions. Guy couldn't find what he wanted so he wrote it.
