UPS's and Linux

I want to get a UPS for my linux system running the 2.6 kernel. I would like to have one that will allow the system to be shutdown with out a user present. I have been googleing around and havn't been able to find what brands are and are not compatible with linux. Has anyone had a good or bad experience with a UPS and linux??? I would like to get a usb one but from what little i have seen serial seems much more compatible.

Thanks
Ed

IMO APC is the most compatable.

You can mail APC for a serial cable for their USB models.

I've had good luck with Belkin and their serial cable models, cheaper then APC, but APC really is the king... depends on your pricerange. I get a good 20 minutes+ out of this $100 Belkin with four machines hooked up to it... that's a lot of watts, especially since 2 of them are T-Birds.

Thanks everyone for the fast replays. Yeah i have heard good things about both those already. Do you have you Belkin setup to automatically shut your system down during a power outage??? One other quick question, my main need for one is because i get a lot of noise in my monitor and i determined (hopefully) that it is because of noisy power. Do all UPS filter the power for noise or only the better ones with AVR

Thanks again

That Belkin filters noise, does it a treat too... I couldn't have halogen lamps plugged in before because they upset DSL. I haven't gotten this one set up to do an autoshutdown when the battery is low, its constantly on my list of crap to-do, but its possible, one of the first things they build in.

It was this guy:

Except what I got was a serial version, not USB... it had UNIX drivers, cost about $120 I think it got picked up off of Egghead or one of the other big resellers... I really wouldn't trust a USB version to work. I just looked up a Serial version that doesn't look like what I've got but had full source code for about 10 distros...
