uploading video from sony handycam, avchd progressive, how to? opensuse Leap 15.1

Linux help, I am trying to upload a video from my sony handycam, avchd progressive. I am using opensuse Leap 15.1.

Other cameras would be automatically be recognized but not this one. I plugged the camera into the hdmi port on the screen card without any effect. The OS does not show it in device information.

Any help will be appreciated.

If you have an adapter like this:

you could pull the Sony memory stick out of your camcorder and use the above adapter to try and get the files off it. You could also try connecting the camcorder by usb instead of hdmi. You would have to convert the avchd files to something standard. It seems you can do it with vlc:

Handbrake could probably handle that task as well. The problem is Sony is so proprietary in everything, it creates nothing but problems. Without having the hardware to play around with, all I can do is offer suggestions on how you might be able to deal with it. Good luck.
