I have a question or two about Linux Kernel 2.4.x - 2.6.x, and what I will need to do in either kernel when I upgrade my processor from an AMD Sempron, to and Athlon XP 3000+.
Here are the details of my system:
- ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard
- will be installing an AMD Athlon XP 3000+
- the Linux distribution I use is Slackware
... my questions are -and I'll keep this brief, aside from removing the old processor and replacing it with the new one, will I need to recompile a kernel before doing so, and then, once the new processor is installed boot my PC up with the new kernel I configured for it? I assumed I would need to, because I would imagine there are some features in the kernel support for that processor I would need to build in. Is the support in the kernel for each chip drastically different enough to warrant this? Common sense told me there would be, but I wanted to verify.
Anyway, I do appreciate your time and assistance. If you have a spare moment and tip or two I'd certainly be grateful. Thank you again!
You don't need to recompile anything. Even if you had some Sempron specific optimizations in your kernel, that Sempron is essentially just an Athlon XP with a smaller cache. AFAIK, the instruction sets are identical.
Well that is good news! Thank you very much for your input, I certainly do appreciate it. I'll be buying the chip next week and switching it out then, and I've got a good feeling about it.
