Upgrading Processor
I salvaged a computer for Linux (actually, it's just the motherboard). It had a 800MHz Duron that burned out (there were scorch marks), 133MHz FSB. What I wanted to know is can I upgrade it to something with a faster bus? The fastest ram (SDRAM DIMMs) goes 133MHz. If I do upgrade to, lets say a Duron 1.6GHz with a 266MHz FSB, what would be the pros, cons, and problems?
Thanks, Josh |
does the motherboard only have sdram slots?
133 would be the max bus speed unless you overclock a little. that motherboard may only take up to a 1.2 or 1.3 ghz duron or 1.3 or 1.4 ghz thunderbird. get the motherboard name and model number and look them up on the web. |
