Upgrading Memory
I have recently purchased new memory for my laptop (Dual Boot with XP and RH8.0 running 2.4.18-14).
I know that XP will have no problems recognizing the new memory. But will I have to recompile the kernel in linux for the memory upgrade to be effective? Also, I have read some posts here and elsewhere about the cache and systems slowing to a crawl with memory upgrades, although almost all of them was in reference to much older hardware (one case was a 486 . . . whoah, the memories). I am not familiar with managing the cache dispersal when upgrading. Pointers will be nice, links to good lit are good as well. Both would be great. [have one 256mb chip now, adding another 256mb chip. MEM is PC2100 200pin] Thanx in advance. |
You will not have any problems unless you are upgrading pass 896 MB. If you put 1 GB you will have to re-compile the kernel for bigmem support or 4 GB.

Thanks. I should get my memory within the next few days. Will post back with results.
