Upgrading Mandriva because of CPU "overclocking"

Hi all,

I recently installed Mandriva 2006 on a system with an ASUS A7V880 motherboard fitted with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ CPU.

What I didn't notice at the outset was that the mainboard had detected my CPU as an AMD Athlon 1800+. To get the board to properly detect my CPU, I have to manually overclock the CPU frequency to 133MHz, instead of the autodetected 100MHz.

Almost immediately after I did so and booted Mandriva, the system crashed (locked completely, no virtual consoles etc.) I didn't find this too surprising, since I'd "changed" the CPU.

My question is this: What's the best way to "upgrade" the CPU and get everything running properly without a full reinstall. ie Can I just upgrade Mandriva from the CDs to have it detect my "new" hardware?

I suspect I can (after a full backup), as long as I also recompile apps like mplayer that I've installed from source, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience. Thanks!

The FSB for an AMD AthlonXP 2400+ should be at 100 MHz. Also the multiplier should be set at 24. If your BIOS does not have a setting for a multiplier of 24 then you need to carefully upgrade the BIOS.

Where did you get that information?

I checked here: http://www.cpu-world.com/info/id/AMD...ification.html

Since my chip number starts with AXDA and ends in C, it seems like 133MHz is the correct setting.

Ouch

The multipler is NOT supposed to be 24. That would overclock the XP 2400+ to 2.4 GHz. That most certainly won't work.

The Athlon XP 2400+ is clocked at 2 GHz (FSB 133MHz/266 multiplicator of 15) or (although I think there were none like that) 2 GHz (FSB 100/200 multiplicator of 20).
